Why see a dietitian?

NUTRITION IN MIND consultation focus

What to expect

For the initial dietetic consultation you will need to bring with you a copy of your most recent blood test results (if relevant) and a completed referral form from your doctor if you have one. This initial appointment is 1-hour in duration which ensures enough time to conduct a thorough nutrition assessment, discuss strategies, devise plans, and provide you with the information you need to make the steps towards better health.

For the assessment you will be asked questions about your lifestyle, current medications and supplements, medical history, symptoms you may be experiencing, and current eating habits. It may be helpful to bring along a food diary with several days worth of entries to help assist you when recalling what you eat, and make a note if you have any particular symptoms that you have noticed.

Follow-up consultations are 30 minutes to an hour in duration and are scheduled to ensure you have the support to keep making progress towards your health goals, and to address any issues which may have arisen since your previous consultation.

NUTRITION IN MIND offers online video consultations for those who have difficulty getting to the practice due to distance or limited availability. These consults are essentially the same as a face-to-face initial consult, but without the ability to conduct a physical assessment if needed. Shorter follow-up video consults can be arranged. Having a video consultation is easy! If you have a laptop/smartphone/tablet device you can connect with our dietitian using Zoom. Zoom is similar to Skype or Facetime but meets security requirements to ensure your session is confidential. You can now receive Medicare rebates for video consultations with a valid CDM/EPC referral from your General Practitioner. You will need to check with your private health insurer to see if they are covered.

It is unrealistic to expect you to change your lifestyle overnight, so our consults encourage small realistic steps in the right direction, to ensure you stay motivated and can sustain a long-term healthier lifestyle.

Every person has unique needs, so when it comes to your health and what you need to eat a "one size fits all" approach does not apply. An accredited practising dietitian has undergone extensive training to become qualified with providing individualised and evidence-based nutrition advice. Whether you seek to achieve your best health or manage more complex medical health conditions a dietitian can help you achieve your health goals.
